The Hubbell Trading Post

The Hubbell Trading Post is located in Ganado AZ, which is 50 miles or so north of I-40 and about 30 miles inside the eastern Arizona border. It's a facinating place and is well worth the diversion to visit it.

The Hubbell Home

We took the guided tour through the Hubbell home. The variety of treasures inside is truly amazing. Visitors are allowed to take pictures inside, but unfortunately, flash photography is prohibited. Consequently, it was difficult to take pictures, especially in some of the rooms which were illuminated by a single 40 watt bare light bulb. So, while some of the photos are quite grainy, at least they give an indication of the splendor of the home.

The baskets. Our tour guide said that the baskets used to hang on the wall. Mr. Hubbell had two daughters and apparently they didn't think they looked very good on the wall, so one day when their father was out, they took them down and nailed them to the ceiling! Mr. Hubbell evidently accepted their rearranging. The Park Service has stabilized the baskets by installing plastic hangers. The Hubbell girls had a thing for "rearranging." Mr. Hubbell had a splendid Brunswick pool table set on cast iron legs. Another time their father was away, the girls decided to cut up the pool table to make shelving out ot it! Hubbell was a doting father to let them escape his wrath on that one.

The dining room, which was in a separate building attached to the rear of the main building. It's a magnificent table. The guide said that Mr. Hubbell's son carved the letter "A" in it on the corner underneath the picture. He apparently got a good tanning for his misdeed.

The opposite corner of the kitchen. That's a foot pedal powered Maytag washing machine!
